Welcome

Life is a journey, and like all journeys it isn't always 'plain sailing'.

Most of us will at some point in our lives encounter difficulties that cannot easily be overcome. These may have only recently arisen or may have been part of your life since childhood: bereavement, redundancy, anxiety, depression, relationship breakdown  and many more issues can hold us back from realising our innate potential.

Sometimes the support of friends, family or others is enough to enable us to find a way forward, but there are times when talking to an impartial and professional third party can help.  I recognise that taking that first step isn't easy, and that finding the 'right person' is important.  Your initial consultation is an opportunity to consider whether Key Counselling and Psychotherapy Service is the right place for you.

How Can I Help?

confidential....non-judgemental...supportive....individual

I provide a confidential and non-judgemental space in which we can together explore the issues which have brought you to this point in your life journey, supporting and enabling you to develop greater self-awareness and consider the choices that are open to you. I have experience of working with a wide range of issues, and my approach to counselling is integrative, which means that I am trained in a number of therapeutic approaches to meet your individual needs.

flexible...affordable...collaborative

Our initial consultation is an opportunity for us to meet, discuss what has brought you to seek therapy at this time and identify what you would like to achieve, as well as exploring whether short-term counselling or a longer period of open-ended psychotherapy would be most helpful. If it is agreed that we will work together then we would contract to meet weekly with regular reviews to ensure that the therapy continues to be helpful and relevant. In order to be as flexible as possible, I offer daytime or evening appointments.   The cost of sessions are £50.00 per therapeutic hour of 50 minutes, with the first session charged at half rate of £25.00 to offer an opportunity for us to meet and explore how we might work together.  A small number of reduced fee places may be available for those on limited incomes, please contact me for further information.

ethical...safe...boundaried

The well-being of my clients is at the heart of everything that I do, and I work in accordance with the ethical framework as set out by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Counselling or Psychotherapy?

Both counselling and psychotherapy offer an effective way of exploring challenging issues with an impartial third party who is both empathic and professionally trained to help you gain more understanding about yourself and the challenges that you face.

The term 'Counselling' is often used to denote time-limited or 'short-term' therapies which are used to deal with specific presenting issues such as bereavement, redundancy or divorce within a mututally agreed time period.  It offers an opportunity to gain new perspectives and coping strategies over problems which you may feel unable to deal with on your own.  Counselling might reference your past, but in general the focus will mainly be on helping you with what you are experiencing right now.

'Psychotherapy' offers an opportunity to work over a longer time period and in greater depth with issues that are more complex and may have been a problem for a longer time.  It aims to not only address the ways in which you manage the problems that you are experiencing right now, but through exploring how your early experiences have shaped the person you have become today and how these may be contributing to current challenges that you are experiencing.  It can bring about change and growth by developing personal insight and changing old and unwanted patterns of behavior, leading to a more fulfilling and balanced life.

In practice, psychotherapy and counselling approaches are complementary and often used interchangeably during the course of therapy in response to an individuals personal requirements.  During your initial session we will explore why you have decided to access therapy at this point in your life and what you hope to gain from it; this will help us to consider which approach will be most beneficial for your situation.
